The Problem
David Anthony of Empty Tomb Choppers in San Diego wanted more control over his fabrication work. He taught himself gas welding, then moved into TIG welding.
But he kept running into the same issue:
- Overheating torches
- Burning hands during long welds
- Rushing welds to avoid heat buildup
This limited his control and affected weld quality.
The Goal
David wanted better control, longer weld time, and a more comfortable setup—without replacing his welding machine.
The Solution
Arc-Zone recommended upgrading to a water-cooled TIG torch system.
The recommended setup included:
- Weldcraft® WP-20 TIG torch (250 amp capacity)
- Arc-Zone PRO package (fully configured system)
- Closed-loop water cooler
- Defense ready-to-use coolant
Why Water Cooling Matters
Water-cooled TIG torches remove heat from the torch head, allowing longer weld times and better control.
Compared to air-cooled systems, they:
- Run cooler during extended welds
- Improve operator comfort
- Allow more consistent arc control
- Extend consumable life
Using a closed-loop cooling system also prevents contamination from minerals found in city water, which can clog internal passages.
Results
After upgrading, David immediately noticed improvements:
- Longer, uninterrupted welds
- Better control of the weld puddle
- Cleaner, more consistent seams
- Reduced hand fatigue
- Lower argon consumption
Instead of rushing, he could slow down and focus on weld quality.
Shop Insight
When your torch runs too hot, you rush the weld. When you rush the weld, quality drops.
Cooling fixes both problems.
Bottom Line
Upgrading to a water-cooled TIG torch improves control, reduces fatigue, and delivers better weld quality—without requiring a new machine.
