Washington Alloy Nickel 99 is an ENi-CI Stick electrode recommended for all-position welding of thin cast iron sections where maximum machinability is required. With a core wire containing approximately 99% nickel, the resulting weld deposit is relatively soft and can be shaped, milled, drilled, or tapped after welding.

Nickel 99 is especially suited for repairing cracked or porous castings and can be used to weld cast iron to itself or to compatible dissimilar metals such as low-alloy and carbon steels. The weld deposit color also closely approximates the appearance of cast iron.

Why Machinability Matters

Cast iron repairs often require more than simply filling a crack. The repaired area may need to be drilled for a bolt, tapped for threads, milled flat, or otherwise machined back to its original dimensions.

Because Nickel 99 produces a relatively soft, highly machinable weld deposit, it is particularly useful when post-weld machining is part of the repair.

Important Strength Consideration

Nickel 99 weld deposits have lower strength and ductility than 55% nickel cast iron electrodes. For this reason, Washington Alloy recommends Nickel 99 primarily for applications where maximum machinability is required or where weld stresses are not overly severe.

For heavier castings or repairs requiring greater strength and ductility, a Nickel 55 electrode may be the better choice.
